Jharkhand is a state in eastern India. It was carved out of the southern part of Bihar on 15 November 2000. The name "Jharkhand" means "The Land of Forests". The industrial city, Ranchi, is its capital and Dumka is sub capital, Jamshedpur is the largest and the biggest industrial city of the state, while Dhanbad and Bokaro Steel City. State symbols of Jharkhand: State day is observed on 15th November, State animal Elephant, State bird Koel, State tree Sal, and State flower Palash. Jharkhand accounts for 40% of the mineral resources of India. Notable People Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Priyanka Chopra, Tanushree Dutta, Imtiaz Ali, Saurabh Tiwary etc. are from Jharkhand.
Education Status
According to the Census 2011, Jharkhand has a literacy rate of 67.63% (male literacy rate 78.45% and female literacy rate 56.21%).
Jharkhand has a network of government and privately run schools, although standards of teaching vary considerably from place to place, as also from school to school. After formation of new state, Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) has been implementing four projects for spread of elementary education namely DPEP, SSA, NPEGEL, KGBV. Hence works have been accomplished in the state towards achieving the goal of UEE but due to slow pace, the target of hundred percent enrolments and retention of children in schools is not yet attained. The medium of instruction in schools is Hindi/English with English/Hindi/Sanskrit/Bengali/Oriya as second language. Jharkhand has 5 universities which have provided the affiliation to number of engineering and management colleges. There are three medical colleges in Jharkhand There 13 Government polytechnic colleges having affiliation to State Board of Technical Education Jharkhand, and 9 private polytechnic colleges available for studying Diploma courses. On May 2008, Jharkhand became the first in India to introduce free haircuts for poor students.
