Manipur is a state in northeastern India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. State day is observed on 21st January. Meeteilon, a Tibeto-Burman language is the official language of Manipur. Brow antlered deer (Sangai), one of the rarest deer in the world, and the state animal is housed here. Manipur is birth place of the horseback sport Polo. Manipur acts as India’s ‘Gateway to the East’ through Moreh and Tamu towns, the land route for trade between India and Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.
Education Status
According to the Census 2011, Manipur has a literacy rate of 79.85% (male literacy rate 86.49% and female literacy rate 73.17%).
At present 786 high and higher secondary schools (226 Government, 103 Government aided and 457 Private) are affiliated to the Board for certification at end of secondary stage i.e. class X. The schools in the state are either managed by the government or by private bodies. Besides the conduct of examination at the end of class X, the development of curriculum and syllabus, preparation, printing and distribution of text-books for class I to X are also done by the Board. English is the primary medium of instruction in various schools in Manipur and also to the colleges and universities as well as other professional institutes in the state. Institutes offering higher education in Manipur consist of Govt. Universities, Polytechnic institutes, Law College, and several recognized professional colleges. North Eastern Regional Institute of Science And Technology (NERIST) plays a very significant role in raising the technical and management education in the state
