Lakshadweep formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea, 200 to 440 km off the south western coast of India. Kavaratti serves as the capital of the Union Territory and the region comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court. It was established on 1st November 1956 with the territorial area covering just 32 sq. km that is least among all the Indian States and Union Territory. The principal languages of Lakshadweep are Malayalam. Coconut fiber extraction and production of fiber products is Lakshadweep's main industry.

According to the Census 2011, Lakshadweep has a literacy rate of 92.28% (male literacy rate 96.11% and female literacy rate 88.25%). Lakshadweep Island have several standard schools, colleges and other academic institutions, computer-training institutes, industrial training institutes, and other technical training institutes.
