Meghalaya is a state in north-east India. The name means "the abode of clouds" in Sanskrit. The capital is Shillong, known as the "Scotland of the East". State day is observed on 21st January. English is the official language of Meghalaya. Meghalaya is one of three states in India to have a Christian majority. The state is the wettest region (Cherrapunji) of India, recording an average of 1200 cm of rains a year. Meghalaya is basically an agricultural state with about 80% of its population depending entirely on agriculture for their livelihood. A portion of the cultivated area is under the traditional shifting agriculture known locally as Jhum cultivation.

Education Status

According to the Census 2011, Meghalaya has a literacy rate of 75.748% (male literacy rate 77.17% and female literacy rate 73.78%).

As of 2006, the state had 5851 primary schools, 1759 middle schools, and 655 higher secondary schools respectively. Institution for higher studies like Indian Institute of Management, the University of Technology and Management which is in Shillong is the first Indian university to introduce cloud computing engineering as a field of study, in collaboration with IBM and the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies. Shillong is one of the top ranked management institutes in the country.
